For my field work, I had the incredible opportunity to observe Open Up's Spectrum Yoga classes. Open Up is a non-profit organization dedicated to making mindfulness and movement accessible to people with disabilities. I wanted to share my observations to give others a sense of what to expect if they're considering attending a class.
What I Observed:
Inclusive and Adaptable: The classes were incredibly inclusive. Teachers offered modifications for every pose, ensuring everyone could participate at their own pace.
Focus on Individual Needs: The teachers were highly attentive to each student's needs and preferences. They checked in frequently and adjusted the class accordingly.
Building Confidence: I witnessed students pushing their boundaries, trying new things, and celebrating their accomplishments.
Creating a Sense of Community: The classes fostered a strong sense of community. Students interacted with each other, shared their experiences, and supported one another.
Sensory Considerations: The teachers were mindful of sensory sensitivities, announcing changes in lighting and music to prepare the students.
Key Takeaways:
Open Up's Spectrum Yoga is more than just a yoga class. It's a space for self-discovery, movement, and connection.
The teachers are incredibly skilled and create a welcoming and supportive environment.
The classes are adaptable to various abilities and preferences.
If you're looking for a unique and inclusive movement experience, I highly recommend checking out Open Up's Spectrum Yoga.
