A Moment of Trust: Honoring a Volunteer Who Brings Our Mission to Life
Rhonda Rinicella on her graduation day at Pitt.
At Open Up, our community is shaped by people who show up with intention, compassion, and a deep belief in what’s possible when everyone is given space to belong. This Volunteer Recognition Week, we’re honored to celebrate one of those people. An incredible volunteer whose presence continues to leave a lasting impact on both our students and our community, Rhonda Rinicella.
When we asked Rhonda to share a moment that has stayed with her, her answer captured the essence of what Open Up is all about:
“During a ‘Supported Yoga for Autism’ class, a student reached out for my hand during one of the poses. The joy on his face and the trust he showed me in that moment warmed my heart and has stayed with me since.”
It’s in these small, powerful moments. Quiet connections, shared trust, and unspoken understanding. This is where the true impact of this work becomes visible.
As a certified yoga instructor and soon-to-be occupational therapist, her path to Open Up was grounded in a passion for inclusive fitness. She saw something here that resonated deeply. A space where that passion wasn’t just welcomed, but shared.
“Open Up stood out to me because it felt like a space where others shared that same passion. Since getting involved, it’s motivated me to keep exploring how yoga and inclusion can shape other spaces as well.”
That ripple effect matters. Not just impact within our walls, but influence that extends outward into other studios, classrooms, and communities.
Through her time volunteering, she’s witnessed firsthand what happens when people are given the opportunity to simply be.
“Open Up gives individuals who are so often ‘othered’ a space where they can truly be themselves and experience the joy of movement. I’ve seen students grow in confidence and connection, which has been so meaningful to be a part of. It’s also reinforced my belief in just how important spaces like this are.”
That belief, the importance of inclusive, affirming spaces, fuels everything we do. And it’s volunteers like her who bring that belief to life in tangible, human ways.
Thank you, Rhonda. Thank you for your presence, your care, and the way you meet each moment with openness and heart. You remind us that this work is not just about programs or classes. It is about connection, dignity, and joy.
And to all of our volunteers, we see you, we appreciate you, and we celebrate you this week and always. If you are interested in volunteering with us send us an email (info@open-up.org) or check out our Voly page to see what volunteer opportunities feel right for you.
