Supporting Students, Growing Myself: Volunteering with Open Up

As a student at the University of Pittsburgh pursuing a certificate in Disability Studies, I was looking for a way to gain hands-on experience working with young children in an inclusive environment—and I’m so glad I found Open Up’s After-School Yoga Clubs.
Each week, I volunteered at Open Up’s accessible yoga studio in Lawrenceville, supporting a small group of students with and without disabilities. The clubs focused on yoga, mindfulness games, crafts, and peer-level interactions—all of which supported students in developing emotional awareness and calming skills.
One of my favorite parts of the experience was connecting one-on-one with the students, especially during yoga practice. These moments allowed me to build rapport and share coping mechanisms that they could take with them beyond the studio. It showed me just how powerful these practices can be, especially in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Not only did the students make me feel welcomed, but the staff were also incredibly open and supportive. I always felt comfortable asking questions, and I learned so much about adapting activities, building connections, and holding space for all kinds of learners.
Volunteering with Open Up was such a memorable and meaningful experience—one I would highly recommend to anyone interested in education, wellness, or disability inclusion. I’m so grateful to be a part of this inclusive community and to witness the positive impact it has on helping young people feel grounded, seen, and creative.
